Exercise 1: Extra Values by Opener

1) No – Shows 5 spades and 4 clubs but does not show extra values.

2) No – Shows solid hearts but does not show extra values.

3) No – Shows a singleton club with heart support, but does not promise extra values.

4) No – May be a balanced minimum, ideally 5-3-3-2. You may also bid 2NT with a balanced 18-19, with the intention of bidding again after game is reached.

 

Exercise 2: Rebid by Opener

1) 2NT - A balanced minimum

2) 2♠ - Shows a 6-card suit

3) 3♠ - Shows a solid trump suit with unknown values

4) 3♥ - Splinter bid, promising club support and a singleton heart

5) 2♥ - Planning to bid hearts again to show 5

6) 2NT – Planning to bid 4NT if partner raises to 3NT. This sequence shows 18-19 balanced.

 

Exercise 3: Rebid by Responder

1) 2♠ - Set the suit

2) 2NT – Natural and Forcing

3) 4♠ - Promising a minimum opening bid with 3+ spades

4) 3♦ - Raise diamonds, thinking slam

5) 3♣ - See what partner does next

6) 2NT – You could raise diamonds, but with a balanced hand and two stoppers in hearts a notrump bid is more descriptive

 

Exercise 4: Extra Values by Responder

1) No - When the responder jumps to game, fast arrival applies. You should expect two or more spades and a minimum opening bid values.

2) Yes - Responder preferences at the minimum level, to show some interest in going beyond game.

3) Yes - When responder cuebids at the game level, he is trying to find out about slam.

4) No – 4♠ response is a fast arrival, showing no slam interest.
