All In One –
Lesson 3
Answers
9. Double. Partner should have 3½ to 4 defensive tricks and your hand should contribute one heart and three spade tricks. You should defeat 2 by 2 to 3 tricks (more on a good day). Your hand is at best invitational in strength so game is not even a sure bet. Doubles of overcalls after partner opens 1NT are penalty and that is exactly what you should do with this hand.
10. 2♣. A single card (K, J) from partner will allow you to make game. Since partner might pass holding only that card if you opened at the one-level you should open a strong two bid.
11. 2NT. To describe a balanced hand too strong to open 1NT, first open with a suit and then jump rebid in no trump. The proper rebid with this 19 point hand is 2NT.
12. Pass. When responder rebids in a suit previously bid by either member of the partnership at the two-level it is invitational with 6 to 10 points. Since partner may have 10 points 1 out of 5 times, it is better to pass this hand and stay low.
