Negative Doubles

 

Exercise 1 – The Negative Double

1)         Double (Support for both unbid suits)

2)         1NT (No 4-card major and stoppers in the overcalled suit)

3)         2♥ (There is no need for a negative double.

4)         Double (Not enough strength to bid at the two-level.)

 

Exercise 2 – Opener’s Rebid after a Negative Double

1)         2♥ (With minimum strength, place partnership in 8-card fit at minimum level)

2)         3♣ (Assume East has both hearts and clubs)

3)         2♠ (With no fit for hearts or clubs, rebid 6-card suit.

4)         2NT (No fit for partner, balanced minimum hand)

 

Exercise 3 – Responder’s Rebid after a Negative Double

1)         Pass (Already told story with double)

2)         3♥ (Showing invitational values [11-12])

3)         4♥ (Game going points)

 

Exercise 4 – More about Negative Doubles

1)         2♥ (Shows 5+ hearts with 6-10 points

2)         3♣ (Preference to opener’s first bid suit)

3)         Pass (Double was for penalty)

4)         Double (With shortness in opponent’s suit, reopen with a double)

5)         Pass (3♥ shows weak hand with long hearts)

6)         Pass (Double was for penalty)

7)         Pass (Double was for penalty)

8)         Pass (Double was for penalty)
